South Hill Wood BC is one of the most popular bowls clubs in the Borough of Bromley. The green is in an attractive public park midway between the middle of Beckenham and the middle of Bromley. Some members are excellent competitive bowlers. Many others belong to the club to enjoy gentle exercise and good company, as well to play bowls.
Founded in 1958 with the support of the former Beckenham Council, the club now has a well-appointed new club house provided in 2008 by Bromley Council. Currently there are over a hundred members – roughly equal numbers of ladies and men.
Through the summer the green is available for playing bowls every day. And there is always a full programme of activities. On many afternoons and every Saturday morning members who want a casual game of bowls come to the club and play. Every Monday and Friday from the start of the season there are club aggregate competitions, the winners being those who at the end of the season have the highest points total. And there are club knock out competitions – for novices, men, ladies and mixed – culminating at Finals Weekend around the beginning of September.
In addition to club play and club competitions, friendly matches are played against other local clubs – in West Wickham, Orpington and Chislehurst, as well as Bromley and Beckenham. And we have four teams in the North West Kent Bowls League. The league has over 100 teams altogether – from Sevenoaks, Dartford, Sidcup, Bromley, Beckenham and many other nearby towns and suburbs.
While playing bowls is the club’s core activity, there is varied programme of social events too which take place all the year – suppers, lunches and “whacky whist” and Quiz evenings are always hugely enjoyed – sometimes there is a waiting list!
The club is managed by a committee elected annually but it is very much a members’ club in which all participate in organisational tasks – many hands make light work.
